5GC PCF - Rule keeper in 5G networks

5GC PCF

PCF manages policies related to Quality of Service (QoS), traffic handling, user access and network resource usage in 5G networks. We can think of it as a rule keeper in 5G networks. Its key functions include:

· Policy Enforcement: PCF defines policies on resource allocation, traffic handling, and service quality for communication sessions.
· QoS Control: PCF is responsible for controlling and ensuring the desired Quality of Service for various services and applications running over the 5G network.
· User Plane Function Interaction: PCF interacts with the User Plane Function (UPF) to manage user data traffic per established policies
· Subscriber Metrics Collection: PCF collects subscriber metrics concerning network usage, applications, and more.
· Service-Aware Resource Management: PCF tailors policies to meet specific service demands, supporting Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC), and Massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC).

In essence, the 5G PCF acts as a policy engine for the 5G network, ensuring that resources are allocated and services are delivered according to the defined policies. This enables network operators to provide differentiated services, optimize network performance, and implement innovative business models.
