A seminar of studying 5G-Advanced and 3GPP R18 was held by China Mobile
In January, China Mobile held a seminar to discuss about the 5G-Advanced and 3GPP R18, focusing on the problems of its direction, current process and subsequent actions with over 40 experts.
5G-Advanced and 3GPP R18 5.5G has been named as 5G-Advanced in April 2021 by 3GPP. 3GPP R18, the first release standardization of 5G-Advanced, symbolizes the official launch of 5G-Advanced standard, which sparked heated discussion in the industry.
After six-month discussion and negotiation from about 163 companies, 3GPP has finally confirmed 56 projects about RAN and SA based on 3GPP R18.
The timeline of 3GPP standard
The highlighted characters of R18 are the combination with new services and the elevation of the capabilities with new network services. In this seminar, the 5G XR and enhanced multi-media project was supported by 82 companies, ranking at the first in the project list, which reflects the trend of what we mentioned above. It enables the new capabilities of providing network services, even the development of metaverse alike.
Three conclusions from experts of promoting 5G-Advanced Although the world has been influenced by the pandemic of COVID-19, the related work of standardization still achieved an outstanding progress. It is appealed that more industry partners in telecom industry should participate in the process of promoting 5G-Advanced, enabling 5G to provide the most value for both society and economy.
Focusing on the evolution of 5G-Advanced, three suggestions were put forwarded by professionals:
1. Innovate new solutions with industrial partners based on specific requirements, developing an up-to-date network and promoting the positive development of 5G-Advanced.
2. To ensure the unification of standard, reach an agreement to set up a major direction and develop the standard of 5G-Advanced with all the industry partners.
3. Develop 5G-Advanced with the integration of industry chain and innovation chain to accelerate the application of technology, creating the new industrial ecology shaped by 5G-Advanced.
