The Latest Development of 5G-Advanced: the first batch of project approval based on 3GPP R18
The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) convened the RAN#94-e meeting from December 6th to December 17th, 2021.
The crucial topic for discussion in this meeting is to approve the first batch of projects based on the standard of 3GPP R18. It is estimated that 27 projects are to be approved in the meeting, and 21 projects of them have already been approved; the rest of them are still under discussion.
April 2021, 3GPP officially named the technology of 5G evolution as 5G-Advanced. June 2021, a workshop about R18 was held by 3GPP to discuss more details. It took about six months to confirm the final list of the first batch of project approval based on 3GPP R18. To develop the 5G-Advanced technology, there are three major goals:
1. Innovate the high-performance 5G network and evolve the 5G technology to meet the rising requirements of diverse applications.
2. Simplify the flexible architecture of 5G intelligent network and accelerate its applications in all industries.
3. Construct a low carbon and effective network to optimize the path of digital transformation.
The sustainable development of 5G requires the joint effort of the whole telecom industry.
